A national policy to maximize the utilization of agricultural resources, for the overall agricultural development in the country, is termed “crop diversification.” It offers many viable options to the farmers to grow a variety of different crops on their farms and it decreases the negative effects of monoculture and provides the present system of crop specialization for better resource utilization. Crop diversification maximizes profit for the farmers from whole farm operations.
Two types of crop diversification exist at farm level: One is vertical diversification and second is horizontal diversification. In vertical diversification, farmers engage in different value addition or other businesses such as poultry, livestock, or fish farming along with crop cultivation. In horizontal diversification, farmers grow many different new kinds of crops such as vegetables, minor crops, and fruits along with major traditional crops.
In Pakistan, the root of economic development is agriculture, which contributes by ∼60% towards employment, food security, and income. There is a need over time to enhance the agricultural productivity to meet the increasing demand for food. In addition to the perpetual roles of agriculture in terms of high yielding varieties of wheat and rice, the growth of agriculture is also acknowledged for diversification in the context of high quality commodities. It is hoped that the progress of Pakistan’s agricultural exports will become smoothed by the implementation of the provisions of World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) through restricting the agricultural subsidies of industrialized countries. Hence, to facilitate the agricultural exports of nontraditional commodities, there is need for agricultural diversification. Nature has endowed Pakistan with diverse types of soils, climates, and agro-ecological resources. Farmers can grow a mixture of crops, off-season vegetables, cut flowers, and can rear special breeds of livestock due to presence of wide diversities across the country.
